Dear Sea World

Technically my first watercolor painting
Of Tilikum. Watched Blackfish the other day and it was really good.

The majority of the public will find this documentary eye-opening. I highly recommend everyone see it.

Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. Along the way, director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiles shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry.
This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals. (x)

"As far as I know, Tilikum was sick and on antibiotics at the time he killed Dawn. He was also consuming about 10 gallons of gelatin each day - likely due to the fact that he has been eating dehydrated, frozen fish and is not absorbing nutrients properly and probably has ulcers too from stress. His teeth are worn down to nothing from chewing on the gates and jaw popping - and he has to have his teeth flushed several times per day to keep him from getting an infection from the fish he eats. I would not call him a healthy, happy, thriving orca."- Samantha Berg, former Seaworld Trainer (X)
"No Orca has ever killed a human in the wild, only in captivity."

Watching Blackfish didn’t surprise me at all in regards to the cruelty happening at SeaWorld… When I watched it over the summer I immediately felt grief and haven’t gone one day without thinking about Tilikum. It’s haunting to believe that the complex and brilliant minds of these lives are being enslaved for our entertainment.  I cannot explain to you how profoundly and deeply saddened I am for him and the other lives that have been robbed from the rich opportunity to live full and complete lives. I hope that one day these highly evolved, intelligent and powerful beings will be left alone and the word “captivity” ceases to exist- except in the books of history.

my protest art for World Orca Day today . if Sea World really wants to inspire the public like they claim they wish to do , they should become a SANCTUARY for injured and sick marine life , not an animal amusement park . they may currently rescue some animals and release them back to their natural habitat , but some isn’t good enough . what about the whales they still continue to hold in captivity? why are they denied freedom? marine animals weren’t put on the earth to be caged for some circus act . captivity kills . LET’S EMPTY THE TANKS!
